Mobile-first Progressive Web App Developer

Thomas FitzgeraldAbout

Mobile-first Progressive Web App Developer

My name is Tom Fitzgerald. I have sold, setup and supported small business computer systems nationwide for more than 30 years. Besides including a complete desktop accounting solution, I also built and implemented many unique business solutions. I taught myself, first, desktop database programming and then, because of the Internet, I taught myself web programming, and finally Progressive Web App programming and implementation. I have seen that many similar businesses have vastly different approaches to business solutions. This is why 'Universal' Apps, many times, just don't cut it. Which exposes the need for CUSTOM Apps in which I specialize.

To get a Jump on new projects I have created a couple of templates that I customize for each client's needs. Check them out ....

  • A progressive web application (PWA), commonly known as a progressive web App, is a type of application software delivered through the web, built using common web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WebAssembly. It is intended to work on any platform that uses a standards-compliant browser, including both desktop and mobile devices.

Since a progressive web App is a type of webpage or website known as a web application, they do not require separate bundling or distribution. Developers can just publish the web application online, ensure that it meets baseline "installability requirements", and users will be able to add the application to their home screen, just like it was downloaded from a webstore.

  • At their heart, Progressive Web Apps are just web applications. Using progressive enhancement, new capabilities are enabled in modern browsers. Using service workers and a web App manifest, your web application becomes reliable and installable. If the new capabilities aren't available, users still get the core experience.

The numbers don't lie! Companies that have launched Progressive Web Apps have seen impressive results. For example, Twitter saw a 65% increase in pages per session, 75% more Tweets, and a 20% decrease in bounce rate, all while reducing the size of their App by over 97%. After switching to a PWA, Nikkei saw 2.3 times more organic traffic, 58% more subscriptions, and 49% more daily active users. Hulu replaced their platform-specific desktop experience with a Progressive Web App and saw a 27% increase in return visits.

Progressive Web Apps provide you with a unique opportunity to deliver a web experience your users will love. Using the latest web features to bring enhanced capabilities and reliability, Progressive Web Apps allow what you build to be installed by anyone, anywhere, on any device with a single codebase.

  • Yes, PWA`s take a little more time to develop that traditional web Apps, but the real cost savings is still TIME. The traditional App development methods require 2 or 3 completely separate development efforts, one for each store, Android, Apple, and Windows. And you still don't even have a website.

Do you charge for your App? If so, Apple wants a piece of your income. That is, if it is listed on the IOS App Store, but not if it is a web App, it still looks and feels like an App, and it also works on a desktop machine, and provides for a website as well. And you wont have to share your income with anyone else.

EXAMPLE: Let's suppose we are developing a Courier Pick up and Delivery App. There possibly could be at least 4 individual Apps required to fulfill this App requirement. One for the company whose Operators take calls and enter the pickup and delivery information, one for the Dispatcher who arranges the calls and assigns them to drivers to maximize times and efficiency, one for the Client to check on Pick Up and Delivery Status as well as billing, and one for the Drivers, that would let them mark start and stop times, get delivery signatures and other proofs of delivery.

Obviously, this could require 4 separate Apps written for EACH App store, as well as a company website. BUT if this is a Web App, then it would only have to be developed one time.

What about changes and updates. Maintaining 9 different code bases, and then submitting each revision to the App store becomes an unbelievable waste of time and money for the company.
